What happened? DPWell, my head went a bit weird. I would like to do another, but it may take awhile, as Im very slow with everything. DPNote that it wasnt covered in distortion. So, when I started these, the equipment wasnt totally out of date, and I didnt feel too out of sorts by the time I finished the last track or two for this record, which was, lets say, recently. I cant because my cassette player has died, the crappest of the crap one I still had, which I used for the last track or two, and which put this sort of rasp on everything. That was my ideal idea of band. I think of The Season is Ours, from the first album. Press ESC to exit. DPIt does span pretty much all of the fifteen years. I do remember once when I was younger and living here, I was driving back from Cheltenham to Bristol, which is not far, and there was a very low, heavy cloud. Its good for people. DKJust talking about that time is reminding me how exciting it was to track these things down, to try and piece together the discographies and history. Now, I think lo-fi became a sort of generic description for what a whole host of different groups were doing, but it also became a sort of pejorative term, as if it was a form of slacking, or a making do in lieu of access to a real studio with proper sound. Certainly early on, you have these songs, and you could mash them up and still be able to have people get a handle on some sort of melody, though it might not be the worlds best melody. Well have a mass cultural exodus from England. On the track Two, at one point there is that drop in the sound, like you used to get back in the day when you used the 4/3 head tape players. You get those frequencies in all sounds anyway. One influential zine in particular, Ptolemaic Terrascope, founded and based in the rural west of England, championed FSA early, positioning them in a dark, drone-y, goth-derived scene that included Windy & Carl and Roy Montgomery along with Bristol acts like the Third Eye Foundation and Amp. But Ive found that these younger kids dont really like reading on Kindles. DP(laughter) Is that criticism or a compliment? Yes, well that is why the world doesnt need to hear another record by me on my own. DPWell, of course. I could only use the 8-track as a mixer because the cassette wouldnt go round anymore, so the last couple of tracks for the record were recorded live to cassette, and then played back through the 8-track to add overdubs. Pick one that's 25 characters or less and includes a letter. Most of the tracks were songs, and some were a couple of instrumentals on the side, then I would pick up again and try to record some more stuff a few years later. But yeah, its always been one idea, and you get to the essence with the new album. Whats remarkable aboutInstrumentals 2015is that it is, straight away, Dave again, completely formed. What the fuck was that? The end of a smallish meteor still reasonably intact, above the cloud level? Im trying to act like Ive seen a UFO, arent I? Trying to take credit, when obviously I havent seen one at all. DKAre these all being reissued by Domino and Drag City then? DPWell not repressed, but re-cut. DPWell, I got to the essence of the one idea with this, if I may be bold. I definitely wasnt picking up a guitar for years on end at a number of points, Im afraid. Flying Saucer Attack by David Keenan I do like feedback. That the first two tracks are called "Past" and "Present" and that the first has more of a "classic" FSA sound with a steady rhythm and huge solo while the second revolves around a buried, near inaudible series of loops, seems to be part of the album's plan, such as it is. To be honest, when I was little it was appalling. This was music you used as insulation, raw material to thicken the space between you and the world, and these qualities were reinforced by the proudly D.I.Y. There's a track called Feedback Song, demonstrating just how much Pearce embraced his defining aesthetic, and later in the collection, as if that wasn't enough, we get Feedback Song Demo. Youve got the essence of the one idea onInstrumentals 2015 5a02188284
